    don't spend any money on it unless you need new tires, tubes, brake pads or seat. the D40 was a venture by Pacific, which branded their Pacific bike with the Mongoose brand. Now Mongoose has mtn bikes that sell for $3,000, but those are the bike shop ones that are only available at LBS. Therefore it would be a waste to spend any money to upgrade your bike. Just ride it and save up for a better ride. Putting money into that bike is like putting money into a 6 year old computer, in the long run its cheaper to buy a new one with new parts.
